Roof Cleaning & Moss Removal in Doncaster

Moss and algae don't just look tired — left alone they lift tiles and block gutters. We clear it safely by hand, never with a pressure washer, and treat the roof to slow it coming back.

Signs your roof needs cleaning

Moss loves the damp, shaded roofs common across South Yorkshire. However, it does more than mark the tiles: trapped moisture works its way underneath, and washed-down debris silts up your gutters. Consequently, dealt with early, it's a straightforward clean rather than a repair job.

  • Moss build-up on ridges, valleys and shaded slopes
  • Green algae or black lichen staining across the tiles
  • Gutters clogged with moss washed down off the roof
  • Damp patches inside caused by moisture trapped under moss
  • Tiles that have started to lift or shed as moss spreads underneath
  • A roof that looks tired but doesn't actually need replacing

No pressure washing, ever

Pressure washing a roof looks like a quick fix. However, it drives water under the tiles and strips their protective surface, so it can shorten a roof's life rather than extend it. Instead, we remove moss by hand and treat the roof with a biocide.

Found lifted or cracked tiles under the moss? Our roof repairs page covers putting those right.

How it works

1

Inspection

We check the roof's condition, how far the moss has spread, and whether any tiles have already lifted or cracked underneath it. This tells us whether a straightforward clean will do, or whether anything else needs attention first.

2

Written quote

A clear, itemised quote for the clean, gutter clear-out and any tile repairs that are genuinely needed — no upselling. You'll see exactly what's included before any work starts, so there are no surprises later.

3

Manual clean

Moss and lichen removed by hand, never pressure-washed, then the roof is treated with a biocide to slow regrowth. Working by hand takes longer than a jet wash, but it protects the tiles instead of damaging them.

4

Gutters cleared

Since moss washes down into the gutters, we clear that out too, so rainwater runs away properly, not just off the roof. A gutter left blocked over winter can overflow and damage the fascia behind it, so we treat this as part of the job, not an extra.

Roof cleaning FAQs

Is it safe to pressure-wash a tiled roof? +
We don't recommend it, and we don't do it. Pressure-washing forces water under tiles and strips the protective granules and surface off concrete and slate, which shortens the roof's life rather than extending it. We remove moss by hand and treat what's left with a biocide instead.
Is moss on my roof actually a problem? +
A light dusting of moss is mostly cosmetic. Left to spread, moss holds moisture against the tiles, encourages them to lift and shed, and washes down into the gutters where it blocks the flow of rainwater — so it's worth dealing with before it gets that far.
How often should a roof be cleaned? +
It depends on the roof's aspect and how shaded it is — a north-facing roof under trees will grow moss much faster than one that dries out in the sun. We can advise on a sensible interval when we inspect yours.
Will you clear the gutters at the same time? +
Yes — moss and lichen washed off the roof usually ends up in the gutters, so we clear them out as part of the same visit rather than leaving you with a blocked run.
Do you treat the roof so moss doesn't just come back? +
We apply a biocide treatment after clearance to slow regrowth. No treatment stops moss forever, but it buys you significantly longer between cleans.

We clean and treat roofs across Doncaster, Rotherham, Barnsley, Worksop, Retford, Mexborough and Armthorpe, plus the wider Doncaster area. Since we're a local team, help is rarely far away.
